about

My first go round at what I'd eventually call on New Lights a "love song for the drunk and broken-hearted." The rhythm section is based on an arrangement by my old friends from Baby Ray, Nate Logus (drums) and Ken Lafler (bass). If I could have found the original rhythm tracks, I would have happily used them, but my rough approximation of their amazing parts will have to do.

lyrics

I look at the picture
I know I shouldn’t
It’s masochistic
We were happy then, and I know that we are not now

22 words, so concise
They don’t say too much
You might think it’s nice
How they don’t explain the hints that you’ve been leaving

And I cannot pretend I know what’s going on in your mind
Fact and fiction, liquid solid, nothing here that’s too defined

The trees are bare, Oktoberfest
Perhaps some beers, did you have their best?
You’ve sampled all the wares I have to offer

If my humble goods are no good for you
Do your worst, say it’s through
I don’t want to be on the leash that you’re leading

And I cannot pretend I know what’s going on in your mind
Fact and fiction, liquid solid, nothing here that’s too defined
I’ll take another draft, the wind is cold, why do you stay outside?
You make no sense, your picket fence crumbles on your neighbor’s side

I’ve been pounding cobblestones
I don’t know what I hope to find
Not too drunk to think that you would ever cease to be unkind
I’ll take another draft, the wind is cold, why do you stay outside?
Fact and fiction, liquid solid, nothing here that’s too defined
(And I cannot pretend I know what’s going on in your mind)
In your mind
In my mind
(And I cannot pretend I know what’s going on in your mind)
Are you mine?
